Using a sauna is not only a relaxing experience but also provides a wide range of physical and mental health benefits. Here are some of the most notable:
🌡️ Improved Circulation – The heat from the sauna causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow and oxygen delivery throughout the body.
🧽 Detoxification – Sweating helps your body flush out toxins, heavy metals, and impurities through your skin.
💪 Muscle Recovery – Saunas can reduce muscle soreness and stiffness after exercise, helping with faster recovery.
🧘 Stress Relief – The warmth encourages relaxation and reduces cortisol levels, promoting a sense of calm and wellbeing.
🛌 Better Sleep – Many users report improved sleep quality after sauna sessions due to reduced stress and muscle tension.
🫁 Respiratory Benefits – Saunas can help open airways, loosen phlegm, and improve breathing for people with mild respiratory issues.
🧖 Skin Cleansing – The heat and sweat unclog pores and remove dead skin cells, leaving skin smoother and more radiant.
❤️ Heart Health – Regular sauna use may help lower blood pressure and improve cardiovascular function over time.
-
It is generally not recommended to wear contact lenses in the sauna.
The high heat and dry air can cause contact lenses to dry out or warp, which may result in discomfort or even damage to your eyes.
If you must wear them, consider using daily disposables and bring eye drops to rehydrate. However, the safest option is to remove them before entering and use prescription glasses if needed.
-
Yes, there is a small changing room within the sauna, where you can store belongings. You can also use the changing rooms and lockers within the Lakeside Adventure Centre free of charge.
You’re also welcome to use their showers, and we also have access to heated outdoor showers too, located close to the sauna.

A Scandinavian sauna—often referred to as a traditional Finnish sauna—is typically:
Heated with wood-burning or electric stoves, using rocks to retain and radiate heat
Used with steam, created by ladling water onto the hot stones to generate bursts of heat (known as löyly)
Hot and dry, operating at temperatures between 70°C and 100°C with low humidity
By contrast, other types of saunas include:
Infrared saunas – These use infrared panels to directly heat the body rather than the air. They operate at lower temperatures (usually 45°C to 60°C) and do not use steam
Steam rooms – These have high humidity levels and lower temperatures, typically around 40°C to 45°C, providing a damp heat experience
Banya (Russian saunas) – Similar to Finnish saunas but often incorporate rituals such as beating the skin with birch branches (venik) for stimulation and exfoliation
Scandinavian saunas are especially valued for their intense dry heat, combined with the option of steam, creating a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating experience rooted in centuries of tradition.

Yes, saunas can contribute to a modest number of calories burned, but they should not be considered a substitute for physical exercise.
When you sit in a sauna, your body works to cool itself, which increases your heart rate and metabolic activity. As a result, you may burn some calories during a session.
A typical 30-minute session may burn between 100 and 150 calories, depending on your body weight, age, and individual metabolism.
However, it's important to note that most of the weight lost immediately after a sauna session is water weight, which will return once you rehydrate.
